ICISTS-KAIST 2011

ICISTS-KAIST, the International Conference for the Integration of Science and Technology into Society, is an annual event organized and hosted by ICISTS, an undergraduate student-led organization at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Since 2005, ICISTS-KAIST conferences have brought together hundreds of students and professionals from around the world to examine socioeconomic issues related to rapid developments in science and technology, and to discuss how science is changing or has the potential to change human society. Gathering individuals from various academic disciplines each year, ICISTS-KAIST has developed into an international and interdisciplinary forum for exchange.
ICISTS-KAIST’s main audience is undergraduate students. Today’s youth face the immensely difficult task of making important decisions about their future within a constantly changing society. By investigating future trends and examining the relationship between science, technology and society, we hope to provide our delegates with an eye-opening experience that will spark self-discovery, inspire them to reevaluate how they perceive the world, and provide guidance in planning for the future at a critical stage in their lives.

Digital Metamorphosis: The Future of Human Society in the Information Era

Picture2
We are currently in the midst of the Information Age, where rapid developments in information and communications technology and electronic media are constantly changing our everyday lives. The miniaturization of electronics and widespread availability of wireless networks are transforming public and private space, and further tearing down communication barriers of time and distance. Proliferation of social network services is redefining human relationships and social interaction. Advances in immersive technology such as holograms, surround sound, and gesture-control interfaces are revolutionizing the way thoughts and ideas can be conveyed. Digital devices can now stimulate our five senses to simulate human experiences, blurring the line between the virtual and physical world.
The information age is still in its infancy. Even at this very moment, new technologies are being developed that will forever change the world as we know it once they enter mainstream society. So how will our daily lives, culture, and social institutions continue to change as we proceed further into the Information Era? What are some of the challenges that we will face within a society where access to cyberspace is ubiquitous? What are the implications behind the coalescence of physical and virtual reality? How is digital technology influencing our thought processes and our identity as individuals? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed during ICISTS-KAIST 2011.
