K-Pop romances resonate with Cambodian readers

A wave of Korean cultural influence from fashion and beauty to the music industry is taking an ever-increasing hold of Cambodia’s young pop consumers.

Korean novels, translated from the original Korean language to Khmer language, have soared immensely in popularity amid this trendy culture wave.

Usually about 150 to 200 pages in length, these novels have catchy titles – almost always dabbling in the topic of love and romance. Some recent titles have included “Your handsomeness grabs my spirits” and “Fall in love with me, girl”.

These pop novels tend to depict young, budding love and play on the exciting and fast-paced romantic imagination of young adults.

Hom Rattana, a student at the University of Law and Economics, said that she’s been reading these romantic novels since her first year of high school.

“The novel has impacts on young people’s mindsets, because it encourages them to have a longing for a certain sweetness and affection from their partner. It makes me want the romantic partner I’m reading about,” she said.

“Khmer novels usually have a lesson at the centre of them, but we aren’t learning much from these Korean novels besides one depiction of love,” Hom Rattana added.

She said that because of this central theme of love and romance, and especially because of the fun and interesting writing style this creates, she prefers these K-pop romance novels to Khmer novels. She finds herself wanting to follow-up on the characters’ stories because they are the same age as Hom Rattana, and like herself, university students.

Heng Solida, another K-pop novel enthusiast, said that most readers are girls, as the novels put a strong focus on playing up to female sentiments.

“The novels use great language and funny phrases to keep me emotionally entertained,” she said.

It’s pretty clear that as young Cambodians, we probably don’t always have the disciplined habits of taking time out of our day to read. This brings us straight to the television. But, the rise of K-pop novels has been challenging the stereotype of youngsters in front of the TV screen as of late, as youth are choosing novels over their favourite programming.

Sok Chanphal, a writer and lyric composer, said that these novels keep readers interested with their fun language, and are missing any messages of importance.

“Some writers just write for the sake of writing. As the writer, we should include a message for the readers because it can help society,” he said.

Ly Chanda chooses not to read K-pop novels because he believes, too, that they lack a message.

“As young Cambodians, we should know what messages are good and what messages are bad. We have to understand that these novels are only for entertainment, and have little to do with real life.”

Vrek Danita, a university student, used to read K-pop novels but now finds them a waste of time.

“It brings teenagers into an imagined world. High school girls who like to read these kinds of books will want to try to have the same kind of lover, and then they’re set up for failure. On top of that, females are portrayed as inferior to their male counterparts.”

'news Y' aims to become Asia's leading news

"news Y," an all-news cable channel that Yonhap News Agency plans to launch later this year, announced on Thursday its future vision of becoming Asia's leading news outlet offering original programming.

In a media explanation meeting held at a Seoul hotel for major local advertisers, news Y pledged to become a "friendly and warm-hearted" broadcaster based on differentiated news programs produced with the help of Yonhap News Agency's 600 reporters worldwide, including 62 overseas correspondents in 35 countries.

"news Y's competitive edge comes from its capacity to provide differentiated content," Kim Seok-jin, managing director of the channel, said in the media explanation meeting attended by some 400 people, including chief advertising officials of the nation's leading advertisers, including Samsung, Hyundai Motor, SK, LG, Lotte, POSCO and GS.

"Abundant news content provided by Yonhap News, which has the largest media coverage network in the country, would be the driving force behind the channel's competitiveness," he stressed.

Yonhap News Agency has been preparing for the channel's launch for nearly one year since it was chosen to run a new 24-hour cable news channel last December.

news Y adopted three I's -- "Informative, International and Innovative" -- as its motto.

The channel said it will provide informative news based on the output of the newswire service, which distributes some 3,000 news articles produced daily by a staff of about 600 reporters. In terms of its international coverage, the company said it will deliver comprehensive world news through Yonhap's 62 correspondents in 46 major cities across 35 countries. The company hopes to use innovative methods to present news in creative formats, news Y stressed.

news Y's main news programs will air three times a day -- from 5 to 8 a.m., at 4 p.m. and at 10 p.m., company officials said, noting that broadcasts would include anchors on the move, independent weather forecasts and interviews with newsmakers.

In addition, news Y will also offer English-language news for foreigners in and out of the country, North Korea news based on the communist country's state media and financial news from Yonhap Infomax, the financial news and information arm of Yonhap News Agency.

Audiences will also be able to watch news content from Al Jazeera Satellite Network; Russia Today, a Moscow-based 24-hour news-only channel; and various news media for overseas Korean communities in about 130 countries around the world, news Y said.

"Various media are now engaged in intense competition in the country, but there is no broadcaster delivering international news to local watchers from Korea's points of view and sending news on the Korean Peninsula to the outside world with our own hands," Park Jung-chan, president and CEO of Yonhap News and its affiliate Yonhap News TV, said during the meeting.

Foreigners pick 'samgyeopsal' as favorite Korean food

SEOUL, Oct. 24 (Yonhap) -- Foreign visitors to South Korea chose "samgyeopsal," or grilled pork belly, as their favorite Korean food, a survey showed Monday.

According to the online survey of 1,984 foreigners who have visited the country, 558 respondents, or 28.1 percent, said they prefer samgyeopsal the most. Grilled at the table, it can be wrapped in lettuce with a mixture of sesame oil and salt or red soy paste dip.

Involving 952 people from English-speaking countries, 870 from Chinese-speaking countries and 162 Japanese, the survey was conducted for five weeks from Sept. 13 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Kimchi, a spicy fermented side dish, and kimchi-based dishes came second with 16.7 percent, followed by "topokki," one of the most famous street snacks here, where rice cake is broiled in hot pepper paste, with 15.8 percent, and bibimbap, a casserole of rice, vegetables, meat and hot pepper paste, with 11.6 percent, according to the survey.

Also on the list were "samgyetang," a whole young chicken stuffed with ginseng, sticky rice and garlic, which is widely recognized in the country as an energy-boosting meal during the summer, and "so-galbi," Korean barbecued beef and short ribs often marinated in a seasoned soy sauce, the survey showed.

"We will take the survey result as a basis for creating diverse online contents to promote Korean food and tourism more," Shin Myun-ho from the city government said.

In an earlier survey conducted in August by the government on the city's attractions, diverse and delicious foods earned the highest mark from foreign visitors. Those who gave top marks to Korean food said they were fascinated by the abundance of side dishes, which outnumber the main dish of a meal, and especially enjoyed so-galbi.

S. Korea, EU agree on close economic cooperation

SEOUL, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the European Union (EU) agreed Wednesday to closely cooperate in economic policies amid uncertainties over the European debt crisis, Seoul's trade ministry said.

Both sides will also utilize the so-called Trade Committee as a consultation body for bilateral cooperation, according to the ministry.

The results came after South Korean Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon and his EU counterpart Karel De Gucht held their first round of the Trade Committee meeting in Seoul earlier in the day.

The committee, co-chaired by the trade chiefs from both sides, is assigned to supervise and facilitate the implementation and application of the free trade accord that took effect in July this year, and consider ways to further enhance trade relations between the two sides.

Under the deal, Seoul and Brussels will eliminate or phase out tariffs on 96 percent of EU goods and 99 percent of South Korean goods within three years after the accord takes effect. They have also agreed to abolish tariffs on most industrial goods within five years of the deal taking effect.

Overall, the deal is expected to boost bilateral trade between South Korea and the EU by as much as 20 percent in the long term, according to earlier estimates by the state-run Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP).

The KIEP said the free trade accord with the world's largest economic bloc will help boost South Korea's exports by US$11 billion and its economic growth by 5.6 percent while creating up to 253,000 jobs over the long haul.

S.Korea to build 16 trauma Centers by 2016

South Korea plans to spend 200 billion won (US$169.6 million) by 2016 to build 16 modern shock trauma centers that can treat patients with serious injuries, the government said Monday.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said it will allocate 40 billion won in its budget for next year for the project. The centers will each have about 40-50 beds, it said.

Slow Food to hold a conference in Korea

Slow Food International (SFI), a non-profit organization promoting "good, clean and fair" food, will hold its Asian conference in South Korea this week, the head of the organization said Tuesday.

The conference, along with an event to promote traditional Korean dishes and the organization's movement, will be held in the city of Namyangju, just east of Seoul, from Wednesday through Sunday, bringing together representatives from 15 countries in the region.

The second slow food conference to be held in South Korea will help establish a network of people interested in producing and consuming clean and healthy food in the region, according to Paolo di Croce, executive-director of Slow Food International.

"It is very important we work to change the food (production and consumption) system at the local level ... because the big challenge here is to have a food system where everyone can have access to good, clean and fair food," he told a press conference here in Seoul.

The organization currently has some 100,000 members in 150 countries around the world.

The SFI began in the late 1980s as a movement against the opening of McDonald's restaurants, the iconic symbol of the fast food industry, in Italy, according to Croce.

The organization, by its nature, works to promote clean, healthy food, but now also works to create a connection between consumers and farmers who produce what he called "fair" products.

"Too many farmers around the world do not earn enough for the job they do, and too often as consumers we are obliged to pay too expensive a price to buy food," Croce said.

"It is very important that we work to change the food system at the local level, but we are in a global system so it's important to think local but also think global. One very good example of what we are doing globally will happen here in the next few days."

S. Korean economy could grow 3.6 pct next year

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean economy could grow 3.6 percent in 2012, down from 3.8 percent growth estimated for this year, as global economic uncertainties affect exports, a private think tank said Thursday.

In its outlook for next year, LG Economic Research Institute (LGERI) said the export of durable goods and related parts could lose steam, as developed countries cut down on their consumption of such products in the wake of the global economic downturn, it said.

The finance ministry earlier had predicted that Asia's fourth-largest economy would grow 4.8 percent in 2012, with the country's gross domestic product gaining 4.5 percent for this year.

LGERI predicted exports may expand by 9.4 percent next year, less than half of this year's forecast rate of 20.9 percent.

It added that on the domestic front, government's efforts to arrest the rise in household debts through a spending cut will likely cause contraction in demand. Such developments can negatively impact the overall economy, but they will improve the economic health in the long-term, it said.

Ballooning household debt tallied at 876.3 trillion won (US$825.1 billion) as of late June has emerged as a major drag on the economy.

The think tank, meanwhile, said the employment market is expected to get grimmer in 2012, as the manufacturing sector, which provides a large portion of the country's jobs, has not expanded recruitment. This trend will likely continue into next year, it added.

Consumer prices will settle at around 3 percent levels next year, while the won's exchange rate will hover at an average of 1,105 won against the U.S. dollar this year, and 1,070 won in 2012, the report said.
